How to Lift a Truck

2022 Ram 1500 Classic

Lifted trucks such as a RAM are becoming more and more popular around Chatham and Rochester, giving drivers plenty of benefits. Whether it’s to enhance off-road capability or purely aesthetic, it’s easy to see why this option is popular with Decatur drivers. Because of this, a common question we hear at Green Dodge is, “How do I lift my truck?” The answer to this question depends on the option you select. And because of that, our team has decided to make this easy to follow guide.

Although there are important differences among suspension lift kits, body lift kits, and leveling kits, the guide below can help you determine if this task is something you can handle on your own.

Supplies Needed to Lift a Truck

Before you can install a lift kit, you will need the proper tools:

  • Vehicle jacks and jack stands
  • Socket wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Lug wrench
  • Screwdriver

We also recommend having a pry bar and a hammer on hand because there may be old parts that are tough to remove. Having WD-40 or the penetrating oil of your choice on hand is also beneficial for loosening tight joints.

How Do I Lift My Truck at Home?

Keep in mind that no set of online instructions should be used as a substitute for the instruction manual that was included with the lift kit that you purchased. The purpose of the guide below is to simply give you an overview of what is involved in installing a lift kit. This can help you decide between having the lift kit professionally installed or tackling the installation yourself.

  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts so that when the truck is off the ground, the wheels are easier to remove.
  3. Raise the vehicle with the jack and jack stands. This can be a lengthy process, and you will want to ensure that the vehicle’s center of gravity is right where it needs to be.
  4. Remove the wheels and tires and set them aside.
  5. Take off the old U-bolts as well as your truck’s current shocks and springs.
  6. Put on the new bolts and as you are assembling any parts according to the instructions found in your lift kit, attach the new shocks and suspension.
  7. Tighten all bolts and other components using a torque wrench. Make sure each component is tightened according to the proper specifications.
  8. Put the tires back on the vehicle.
  9. Slowly and carefully lower the vehicle to the ground.

Depending on how much you want to modify your vehicle, there may be other steps involved. For example, you may be required to install a longer driveshaft, a new transfer case, etc.

Should I Lift My Truck at Home?

Now that you know how to lift a truck, you may be wondering whether you should attempt the process on your own or not. Even for experienced DIY experts, lifting a truck is a difficult, time-consuming process. At Green Dodge, we understand that many drivers are looking to save money because lift kits can be expensive. Keep in mind that if you do not already have the tools needed to complete the task, it may end up being more affordable to leave the installation to a professional.
